Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart will start the season on the physically unable to perform list.

Stewart is still bothered by ankle problems and will miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season. He suffered an ankle injury last November against Philadelphia and missed the last five games of the season, then underwent surgery in the offseason.

The 26-year-old Oregon product rushed for 336 yards with a touchdown in nine games last year, and has 3,836 yards with 27 touchdowns in five seasons. He was selected by the Panthers with the 13th overall pick of the 2008 draft and had his best season in 2009, rushing for 1,133 yards with 10 scores.

The Panthers also placed rookie guard Edmund Kugbila on injured reserve and waived/injured defensive tackle Frank Kearse and wide receiver Joe Adams.
