Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Coyotes locked up pending unrestricted free goaltender Mike Smith on Monday, thanks to a new six-year contract.

No financial terms were revealed, but multiple sources indicate it will average approximately $5.7 million per season.

Smith, who was set to hit the market next Friday, finished 15-12-5 with a 2.58 goals-against average, .910 save percentage and five shutouts in 34 games for the Coyotes a season ago.

"We are pleased to sign Mike to a multi-year contract," said Maloney. "Mike has emerged as a top NHL goaltender with his size, athletic ability and strong work ethic. He is capable of leading us to a Stanley Cup championship, the goal of our franchise. This is an important signing for our Club."

The 31-year-old native of Ontario came into his own in 2011-12, going 38-18-10 with eight shutouts and a 2.21 GAA in 67 games, and helped Phoenix reach the Western Conference finals.

"I'm thrilled to re-sign with the Coyotes," said Smith. "We have a great young team and an excellent coaching staff and management team. I've really enjoyed playing in the Valley the past two seasons and this is where I wanted to stay."

Over 263 games for the Stars, Lightning and Coyotes, Smith has compiled a 120-96-34 record with 24 shutouts, a 2.57 GAA and .913 save percentage.
