DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- There are a bunch of nervous drivers, crew members and car owners looking for a couple more miles per hour at Daytona International Speedway. The fight to make the field commences around 2:17 with the first of two Budweiser 150 Duels.
Danica Patrick and Jeff Gordon go off up front, leading the chase for spots 3 through 32 in Sundays 500. They will start 1-2 in the 500 after turning the fastest laps in qualifying, but this afternoon usually offers up the best insight for the cars and drivers who have the best chance of winning the Great American Race.
Sterling Marlin, a two-time Daytona 500 champion, used to love to say two things about racing. "You gotta drive it like you stole it," and "we are just glad we brought the car back with all four fenders and all four tires."
Sunday is for driving it like they stole it. Thursday is for bringing the teams number one car back to the shop in one piece.
