Davie, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Sherman was fired as the Miami Dolphins' offensive coordinator Monday, a move made in response to a pair of season- ending losses that knocked the team out of playoff consideration.

The Dolphins managed just seven points in setbacks to AFC East also-rans Buffalo and the New York Jets to conclude their 2013 campaign with an 8-8 record, one game behind San Diego for the conference's sixth and final playoff seed.

Despite young quarterback Ryan Tannehill showing progress in his second pro season, Sherman's offense ended the season 27th in total yards and 26th in scoring, with the Dolphins held to 19 points or less in six of their eight losses.

Sherman, a former head coach of the Green Bay Packers, was hired as Miami's offensive coordinator shortly after Joe Philbin's appointment as the Dolphins' head coach in January of 2012. Philbin had served as an assistant under Sherman in Green Bay from 2003-05 and also played for the 59-year-old at Worcester Academy, a Massachusetts prep school.

"I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins," said Philbin in a statement. "Mike has been a mentor to me throughout my coaching career, dating back to 1979. He is a man of great integrity, dedicated to his family, his team, his players and his profession. On behalf of the entire Miami Dolphins organization I want to wish Mike and his family the very best in the future."

Sherman also had a prior history with Tannehill, having been the 2012 first- round pick's head coach at Texas A&M. Sherman was fired by the Aggies nearly two months before joining Philbin's staff.
