The Jacksonville Giants look to defend their title as they make their third consecutive trip to the ABA's Final Four Championship. This year it will be a little different, however, as the Giants will be hosting the tournament right here on their home court starting April 11th when the ABA's four best teams from across the country meet in Jacksonville.
"We're excited about the opportunity to host this championship. It's a great opportunity for the team, the fans and the City of Jacksonville. We hope everyone will get involved and support their home team Giants as they try to win another championship," said Giants' owner Ron Sholes. This will be the first time Jacksonville has hosted a professional basketball championship event. The Giants previously hosted the 2010-11 ABA All Star game at the Veterans Memorial Arena and it drew a crowd of approximately 4,300.
During the 2012-13 regular season the Giants went 29-1 and were ranked atop the ABA's Power Rankings at the end of the regular season. They received their only loss to the top seeded Western conference Dallas Vandals team. In addition to Jacksonville and Dallas advancing to the Final Four, the two remaining teams will be determined this weekend. One of those slots may include the team that the Giants faced last year in the ABA Championship, the South Carolina Warriors, The Warriors are also the only team to defeat the Giants at home in three years. The San Diego Surf is the other favorite to advance. "Winning another championship is not going to be easy with the level of competition from the league's best teams, but our guys are healthy and this is what we've worked for all season. We want to bring Jacksonville another championship," said Giants' Head Coach Kevin Waters.
The Final Four games will be played at UNF Arena April 11th at 5 and 7pm. Then, the best of three championship series will start on Saturday, April 13th at 5pm at UNF Arena, followed by game two on Sunday, April 14th at 5pm at the Veterans Memorial Arena. If necessary, game three will be played Monday evening at 7pm.
