TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel is nursing an ankle injury.

Sports Information Director Elliott Finebloom said Manuel was held out of practice Thursday as a precautionary measure.

Manuel is a fifth-year senior who has battled injuries throughout his career at Florida State, although he came into camp this month in what he said was the best shape of his life.

Manuel was walking without crutches on Thursday.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher is expected to address his quarterback's injury following Thursday's practice.

Redshirt sophomore Clint Trickett was Manuel's backup last season and is competing with redshirt freshman Jacob Coker for the No. 2 spot this year.

Florida State opens its season on Sept. 1 against Murray (Ky.) State.
