MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Miami Marlins announced a series of transactions that impacts their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight’s series opener against the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Ala.
Outfielders Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick have been promoted to the Major League Miami Marlins, and will make their big league debuts tonight against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, Colo.
In his 49 games for the Suns, the 21-year-old Yelich recorded a .280 average (54-193), blasting seven homers and driving in 29 RBI prior to his promotion. The California native, who was ranked the second-best prospect in the Miami Marlins system by Baseball America prior to this season, was selected by the Marlins in the first round of the 2009 draft.
Marisnick, who earlier this month started the 2013 Southern League All-Star Game at Bragan Field for the South Division team, compiled a .294 clip (78-265), adding 12 homers and 46 RBI in his 67 contests with Jacksonville. At the time of his promotion, Marisnick leads the Southern League in slugging percentage (.502), as well as fourth in batting average. The 22-year-old was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the third round of the 2009 draft and acquired by the Marlins from Toronto via a trade on November 19, 2012.
In addition, the Marlins announced infielder Derek Dietrich and outfielder Marcell Ozuna have been optioned to Double-A Jacksonville.
Ozuna was the first Sun to be promoted to the Major Leagues this season on April 30 and recorded a .265 mark (73-275) with three homers and 32 RBI in 70 games for the Marlins. Prior to his promotion on April 30, the native of the Dominican Republic accumulated a .333 average (14-42) with five homers and 15 RBI.
Dietrich followed Ozuna to Miami eight days later after receiving the call-up to the Marlins on May 8 from Jacksonville. In 57 games with Miami, the 24-year-old compiled a .214 clip (46-215), along with nine roundtrippers and 23 RBI. Dietrich began the 2013 campaign with the Suns, recording a .282 average (29-103) with four longballs and 16 RBI in 28 contests.
Yelich and Marisnick become the fourth and fifth Suns players to be promoted to the Major Leagues this season after outfielder Marcell Ozuna, infielder Derek Dietrich and left-handed reliever Edgar Olmos.
