ARDMORE, Pa. -- North Florida golfer Kevin Phelan opened play Thursday in the 113th U.S. Open Golf Championship with a one-over-par round of 71 at Merion Golf Club.

Phelan, who recently completed his senior season for the Ospreys, ended the day tied for 35th. He owns the lowest completed first round score among the 10 amateurs competing in the event.

With his early strong showing, Phelan enjoyed some attention during the NBC Television coverage on Thursday. Several times over his closing nine holes he was featured on the broadcast..

First round play was suspended due to darkness with nearly half the field still on the course following intermittent weather delays during the day.

Luke Donald leads the tournament at 4-under through 13 holes of play while Phil Mickelson is the clubhouse leader following an opening round 67 (-3).

The UNF standout is scheduled to begin his second round at 2:31 p.m. from Tee No. 1, but will likely have his starting time moved back with first round play carrying over into Friday.

Live scoring and video coverage is available at and as well as on ESPN and NBC.
