JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The U.S. Olympic Committee is eyeing Jacksonville and a number of other cities to potentially host the 2024 Olympic games.

The USOC sent letters to the mayors of 35 U.S. cities this week to gauge their interest in making a bid for the 2024 Olympics.

The City of Jacksonville tells Action News, it has yet to receive any letter from the OSOC.

Two other Florida cities, Miami and Orlando, were also contacted by the committee.

It's a costly endeavor just to make a bid, Chicago and New York spent more than $10 million in their respective bids only to eventually be eliminated from the running.

The next Olympic games will be held in Sochi in 2014.

Jacksonville is already making a bid to host the 2016 Olympic Swimming Trials.

I hope the "powers that be" in Jacksonville realize that this city cannot compete with Orlando, or Miami for that matter, and will refrain from wasting any of the TAXPAYERS money to try to lure the Olympics here.
