Bicyclist hit by car on Mayport Road; driver arrested after brief chase

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a bicyclist was in the hospital Saturday night with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car on Mayport Road.

JSO said an off-duty Atlantic Beach Police officer came to the scene to help out the victim and the driver got in his car to flee when he was the officer.

The police officer took the driver into custody after a short chase that lasted “a few blocks,” according to JSO. He was arrested and is being charged with fleeing the scene of an accident and resisting arrest.

Other charges may be filed as the crash is investigated.

Mayport Road reopened Sunday night after the crash.
