"Buresh Blog": Eye on big weekend storm system - Jan. 18th

Jan. 18, 2017 — An active weekend of weather will end by early Monday, the 23rd.  A very strong upper level disturbance -- see the upper level forecast chart below -- will roll (like a bowling ball!) across the Gulf Coast region through the weekend.   With plenty of moisture available this El Nino-like storm system will produce severe storms across the Southeast, the First Coast included.    The highest potential for Jacksonville will be late Sunday/Sunday night though a few strong storms near a warm front will be possible Saturday too.  Everyone will get at least some rain with amounts from Sat. through early Mon. averaging an inch but as much as 2"+ in spots with the heaviest likely to be near & north & west of Jacksonville.  The most extreme set-up (heaviest rain & most intense storms incuding tornadoes) looks to be setting up across the Fl. Panhandle, Mississippi, Alabama & Georgia.  Stay up to date through the weekend!

Speaking of storms... SciJinks has come out with an interactive game to help kids better understand lightning - click -- here.

"Citizen scientists" are needed - click -- here --.  The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network—CoCoRaHS.  Thousands of volunteers across the U.S. take daily precipitation measurements -- something we often use in the First Alert Weather Center.

Florida's Arbor Day (trees!) is Jan. 20th (because of the mild climate).  Good info. -- here --.  Map below courtesy the Arbor Day Foundation:
