"Buresh Blog": May averages, peak of the widlfire season - April 26th

April 26, 2017 — We turn the calendars to May.... averages at JIA:

Low / High temps. - 1st: 58 / 82 degrees, 31st: 67 / 88

Rainfall: 2.48"

Sunrise / Sunset: 1st - 6:42am / 8:05pm, 31st - 6:25am / 8:23pm - gain 35 min. of daylight

NE Fl./SE Ga are in the midst of the wildfire season with a solid rainfall deficit for most areas going back to January.  The deficit is nearly 7" at JIA - an area that missed out on some early April heavy rain.  There are some signs for some hope - perhaps - near May 5th for more significant rain but - on average - the "wet season" doesn't begin in earnest until June.

But even the areas that had a wet start to April are hurting when it comes to overall dryness.

More than half our avg. rainfall occurs from June through Sept.:

Temps. have been well above avg. too with the only notable exception during the middle of March.

Given the warm, very dry conditions, the St. Johns River Management District has a handy web site to help with landscaping ideas that are locally suited for Fl./SE Ga. - click here.... UF also has a good site - here.
