1 dead, 1 injured in head-on crash

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — One person died and another was seriously injured in a head-on crash Tuesday in Putnam County.

According to officials, Jasmine Varnes, 22, of Palatka, was driving east on State Road 100 when she crossed the center line and hit Bennie Clifton, 38, of San Mateo, head-on.

Clifton was pronounced dead on scene by rescuers.

Varnes was airlifted to Shands Gainesville hospital with serious injuries.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. No charges have been filed at this time.
