Duval County School District changing football game times next semester

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Story published 6/20/19:

Duval County Public Schools is making some changes to keep kids safe next semester.

On Thursday school officials announced varsity football games will now begin at 6 p.m. in an effort to decrease the risk for violence. School officials said it’s an effort to enhance safety for people at the games.

This comes after two shootings during high school football games, one of which happened earlier this year at Terry Parker High School, where a teen was shot.

Another shooting incident took place last August, when a young man was shot and killed just outside of a football game at Raines High School.

Selina Poole is one local mom who said she believes this new time change ahead of next semester is a step in the right direction to keep kids safe.

“As a mom, you get a little kind of nervous as to what’s going to happen because it could happen (at) any school. I have to give my hats off to DCPS for trying to move in the right direction and maybe earlier times may help,” Poole said.

Although Poole feels that can could happen at any time of the day, she’s glad to know the school district is being proactive.
