Close races for the GOP in Florida's primary election

There are a couple of close house races after the ballots are tallied in the Florida primary elections.

Candidates have a close margin in House District 15 in Jacksonville, House District 40 in Polk County, and House District 43 in Central Florida.

The Jacksonville-area district candidates Jay Frant, and Paul Renner, spent almost $700,000 combined as of Friday. Frant held the lead for House District 15 by three votes as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. A recount is expected to begin Thursday, said Duval County Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland.

The winner of House District 15 will face off against two write-in candidates in the general election.

Republican candidate Colleen Burton for House District 40 led against attorney John Hugh Shannon by 173 votes. About 8,500 ballots were cast in Polk County.

Democratic Rep. Ricardo Rangel was defeated in his bid for a second term in Central Florida by John Cortes, the vice chairman for the Democratic Hispanic Caucus of Florida. Cortes led with about 52 percent of the vote against Rangel’s 48 percent.
