Duval County a key political battleground in election

Jacksonville, FL. — As preparations are made to welcome President Donald Trump at Cecil Field Thursday, the Duval GOP and Duval County Democratic Party are ramping up their campaigns.

Both parties agree Duval County is a key battleground in the fight for victory on Election Day.

Duval County, once a conservative vote, is now a political battleground.

The last time Duval voted for a Democratic president was in 1976, for Jimmy Carter.

In 2016, President Trump won the county vote by a slim margin.

Dr. Matthew Corrigan, a political science expert at Jacksonville University, said changing demographics and an increase in younger and Black voters has helped the Democratic Party.

Registered Democrats make up about 41 percent of the Duval County vote, while Republicans claim 35 percent.

Twenty- one percent are registered with no party affiliation.
