First person-to-person Zika virus case confirmed in Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The first person-to-person Zika virus case has been confirmed in Florida.

The first confirmation of a sexually transmitted Zika virus case has been reported in Polk County. The virus was transmitted from an individual who traveled out of the country.

“Now that there is a person-to-person transmitted case of the Zika virus in Florida, I am requesting the CDC to schedule another conference call with Florida healthcare workers to ensure they have all the resources and information they need to protect families,” said Gov. Rick Scott. “I appreciate the CDC for previously speaking with Florida doctors and healthcare workers on a conference call last month, but it is imperative that the most up-to-date information is available so we can stay ahead of the possible spread of the Zika virus in Florida. We will continue to do all we can to keep families across our state safe.”

The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New studies say the Zika virus also causes severe birth defects.

Scott activated a Zika information hotline in February that is managed by the Florida Department of Health. People can call the hotline and received answers to questions on the Zika virus and the state's preparedness efforts.

The number for the Zika virus information hotline is 855-622-6735.
