Florida Dept. of Health shows COVID cases on the rise, vaccinations stagnating

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Newly-released numbers from the Florida Department of Health show COVID-19 cases continue to rise as vaccination rates continue to stagnate.

Dr. Saman Soleymani of Avecina Medical says the virus is far from over.

The Department of Health shows statewide, new cases have almost doubled from July 2 to 9, while vaccinations show to be slowing each week.

Data from the Health Department also show the percentage of people vaccinated in some of our local counties this past week versus the week before that:

Percent-vaccinated for July 2 - 8:

  • Duval 48%
  • St Johns: 61%
  • Clay: 41%
  • Nassau: 50%
  • Baker: 29%

Percent-vaccinated for July 9 - 15:

  • Duval: 49%
  • St. Johns: 62%
  • Clay: 42%
  • Nassau: 50%
  • Baker: 29%

The rate has only gone up by a percentage point for Duval, St Johns, and Clay counties, while Nassau and Baker counties have stayed the same.

Soleymani says he’s seeing a significant rise in patients testing positive at his three locations. ”Over the last ten days, we are seeing some of the highest volume of COVID-positive patients even compared to the peak of last year,” he said.
