• Wrong-way crash on expressway kills 1 in Tampa

    TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Florida police say a man driving recklessly and affected by alcohol headed the wrong way on an expressway in Tampa and hit and killed another driver.

    The crash happened early Sunday morning.

    The Tampa Bay Times reports that 27-year-old Stephen Joseph Paleveda was driving pickup truck. Police said his headlights were off, and he was running red lights and driving the wrong way on one-way streets.

    Tampa officials say he drive onto the Selmon Expressway, driving eastbound in the westbound lanes. Police said Paleveda struck the driver of another car, a 68-year-old man.

    That driver died in the crash.

    Police said alcohol was also a factor in the crash.

    Officers said Paleveda got out of his truck and tried to flee on foot. Responders found him nearby.

    Charges are pending.
