Gainesville apartment fire displaces mother, children

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — An apartment fire early Sunday evening has displaced a mother and her two children, ages 6 and 7.

The fire began in the kitchen in an apartment at the Gardenia Gardens complex at NE 8th Avenue and NE 17th Drive. Eight trucks responded to the fire due to the size of the building, according to a release from Gainesville Fire Rescue Department District Chief Michael Cowart.

Due to smoke damage in the apartment, the family is staying in temporary housing arranged by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Cowart said.
