Action News Jax Investigates: Local salon inspection reports revealed

Action News Jax is digging through the inspection reports for dozens of local hair and nail salons.

The state goes through a long checklist to make sure dirty equipment isn't being used on customers.

Our Letisha Bereola went through 120 pages worth of inspection reports for 50 local businesses!

We went page by page looking for violations.

The state inspects everything from foot spas.to the ventilation system. There are strict state requirements your salon must follow to keep its license.

That includes clean linens, making sure hair is continually removed from the floor and even banning combs from the pockets of stylists.

We checked the most recent inspections for 50 local hair and nail salons and found only five violations, all in connection with licenses not being posted conspicuously. Salons, and their workers, must have licenses displayed out in the open.

Total Hair Experience on Beach Boulevard was one of many that passed their inspection with no violations. Mary Nguyen is a nail technician there and said she's seen it all.

"I've been in a couple of salons where I've left the first day," Nguyen said.

We asked her the one rule she’s seen broken the most:

"The re-use of buffers and files. Here we have, everyone has their own individual buffer and file. Those can't be sanitized," Nguyen said.

Salon co-owner Ben Brando said combs need to be washed before they're sterilized.

"If a comb goes from somebody's head to the blue liquid, it's contaminated. You're bringing the germs and bacteria into a sterile environment and then it's contaminated and left to sit there sometimes for days," Brando said.

Lastly, Nguyen said to listen to your gut before your prop your feet up.

"If you feel like something is dirty, most likely it’s dirty," Nguyen said.

There's an easy way to make sure your nail technician is using clean tools: just bring your own.
