“Just a happy kid”: Family mourns 1-year-old killed in tragic crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Family members prepare to lay their 1-year-old child to rest after a tragic crash in Sherwood Forest last Thursday.

Giovanni Smith was 19-months-old when he was run over by an SUV in the family’s driveway. The boy’s 14-year-old brother was behind the wheel.

“Instant tears trying to figure out what was going on,” Shannel Stallworth, Gio’s aunt, said. “Immediately as a mother — I could think, that could’ve one of mine. It could’ve been one of mine. With the holidays coming up that’ll be difficult too with his birthday. But we will all be there for them.”

Gio would’ve turned 2 years old in December. The family is preparing for funeral arrangements Thursday at Greater Friendly Baptist Church.

Stallworth, who has three boys of her own, said she’ll remember Gio’s smile.

“All of us has a baby boy that has so much energy — the life of the party. They run the show. Gio was just that.”

She set up a Go Fund Me which has already raised more than $7,000 for the family. Stallworth said Gio’s dad owns his own company as an over-the-road truck driver and his mother stays at home.

She hopes the funds raised will help them be able to grieve together and get counseling for the tragedy.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said it is still investigating the crash.
