Local mother of 3 gets utility and rental relief from Catholic Charities St. Augustine

St. Augustine, FL. — A local mother of three is thanking a local charity for helping her get back on her feet after she lost her job.

Margie Sikora is a local mother of three living in St. Johns County.

Last August she found herself not only jobless but trying to feed a newborn baby.

“It was just so much going on I really didn’t know what to do,” Margie Sikora said.

To add to the stress her boyfriend is suffering from mental health issues and left during her pregnancy.

“We were fighting a lot it was pretty much like I love you, I hate you. I don’t want to be with you. I want to be with you,” Sikora said.

She was worried her money was running out so when she couldn’t pay for her rent and utilities she turned to Catholic Charities St. Augustine for help.

The local charity told Action News Jax the need has more than doubled. It went helping 2,029 people to 4,393 within the last year.

Kate Fermani a case worker with the charity helped set up Sikora with rental assistance to get back on her feet.

“Of course we provide things like rental, utilities but the one thing that’s need most is just listening. People they’re scared. There are people that just started testing positive and all of sudden Covid was very real to them,” Fermani said.

She also checked in on Sikora and helped this mother get diapers and food for her kids.

“She’s my guardian angel. I told her that. I told her I don’t know what I would do without you cause it was rough, it really was rough.
