1 dead, 1 injured in shooting; Jacksonville police searching for man who may have information

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE: - 6/24/19: On Monday, Action News Jax reporter Courtney Cole went to a local Shell gas station near the scene of Saturday's triple shooting on Palmdale and Smyrna streets in search of surveillance video that could give a better idea of who might be involved in the shooting.

Police say the car caught in the middle of the shootout drove to the Shell.

The moments outside the gas station were not captured. The worker inside told Cole the owner is working to replace the surveillance camera outside.

However, the cameras inside the gas station do work. Cole looked through the surveillance video for around the time the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says officers responded to the shooting.

In the video, you can see the first JSO officer walk in around 5:33 p.m. Saturday. He talks to one of the employees and walks around the back, where the surveillance screen is located.

Twenty minutes later, a second JSO officer comes in the gas station store but no sign of the person if interest.

Cole reached out to JSO for more information about the motive for the shooting and the identity of the victims. JSO said the investigation is active and ongoing.  Nothing new has been released.

When we learn new details, we will share them on Action News Jax.

UPDATE, 6/23/19, 8:30 P.M.: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on Sunday released photos of a man who investigators believe may have information about the shooting.

JSO said after the shooting, the man left the area in a vehicle that has since been recovered.

Anyone with information that can lead to the identity of this unknown person is asked to contact the JSO at 904-630-0500 or email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. To remain anonymous and receive a possible reward up to $3,000 if the tip leads to an arrest, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.

UPDATE, 6/22/19, 11 P.M.: Police are investigating after a shootout in front of a local restaurant left one man dead and another injured.

It happened near Palmdale and Smyrna streets. Around the corner, police were investigating another crime scene related to the shootout.

TRENDING:

Police said at least 50 gunshots were fired and they’ve contacted local hospitals just in case more people show up suffering from gunshot wounds.

Officers said there were multiple calibers of shell casings, which is how they know there was more than one gun involved.

On Saturday, people in the Palmdale community were heartbroken to learn their loved one was gunned down in a shootout that happened in broad daylight.

Tony Mixon was one neighbor in the area who was left feeling uneasy about the situation.

“I didn’t hear any gunshots. I was on the west side at the time. Somebody called and said, 'You know, it was somebody out in the middle of the street,'” Mixon said.

Mixon lives on the block where the shootout took place. Police said it happened around 6 p.m. on Saturday evening and at least 50 shots were fired near Palmdale and Smyrna streets. Right around the corner, a car that was caught in the crossfire ended up at the Shell station on Lem Turner Road where the driver asked employees to call 911.

“This doesn’t happen here very often at all. As you can see, it’s a lot of people out here and this is why, because this don’t happen over here,” Mixon said.

Officers are still looking for the person who was driving the car that was caught in the crossfire.

There were several people outside when it happened, but there's still no word as to why the shootout took place. Sergeant Steve Ruglaff said that’s information police plan to find out during their investigation.

“With as many rounds that were shot, I would not be surprised to find anybody else that could be shot,” Ruglaff said.

The incident left neighbors in the area worried about their safety and the safety of their loved ones.

"That was my main concern. I have a lot of friends and family over here," Mixon said.

Police are checking surveillance footage in the area. There are at least two men they’re looking for who they believe have information about what happened.

“You just have to face the fact it’s crime everywhere, but this is surprising for over here,” Mixon said.

Police have not identified the person who died, but they’re asking anyone who was in the area during the time of the shooting and may know something to contact police.
