12-year-old boy shoots self in hand at Macclenny home

The Baker County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a 12-year-old boy shot himself in the hand at a home in Macclenny Friday.

Deputies responded to a home on Quail Lane and were told that the boy shot himself in the left hand with a 9 mm handgun, BCSO said in a news release.

According to the release, "the Juvenile resided at the residence with his mother, (4)siblings, and (1) nephew. Ages 6 mo, 10, 17, 23, and 25."

It was determined that the gun, which was placed in the bottom of a dresser drawer under some clothing by the boy's 23-year-old sibling, belonged to a family friend.

The gun's owner left it at the home after plans to go to a shooting range in Lake City fell through and he planned to come back for the gun at a later time.
