15-year-old crashes Jeep into infant's bedroom in Baker County

BAKER COUNTY, Fla. — A 15-year-old is facing charges after troopers say she crashed a Jeep into a family's home Saturday.

Victoria Hazlewood said she had just taken 2-month-old Gabrielle out of her crib Saturday morning.

Moments later, the Jeep crashed into the home on Islamorada Drive – taking out walls in the infant's bedroom and splitting the crib in half.

“They rolled four times, then ended up on their side and boom,” Judy Carr, Gabrielle’s grandma, said. “I just ran out the house, and I wanted to make sure they were OK. These three little babies come out.”

Troopers say a 15-year-old girl was driving with two 11-year-olds inside the Jeep when it flipped several times, then crashed into the home.

Tire tracks in the yard show where it took out a mailbox before barreling into the corner of the house.

The teen’s family tells Action News Jax she took the keys and went on a joy ride.

“All I could do is just hug her and she was shaken up, she was scared,” Carr said.

Troopers say the girls' injuries were only minor.

Carr showed Action News Jax reporter Brittney Donovan the damage inside the room where her newborn granddaughter sleeps.

“I went into that room, I saw that crib and I broke down. All I could do was thank God we weren't in the room,” Hazlewood said.

The family tells me neighbors immediately stepped up to help, covering the hole in the house with a tarp and offering food and a place to stay.

Carr says hours later, the 15-year-old and her dad came over with a box -- a new crib for Gabrielle.

“He said, ‘I know this doesn’t make up for anything.’ I was like, 'Come on, we’re Christian people,'” Carr said.

The teen is facing a careless driving charge, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Carr said the debris will be cleaned up and the walls repaired. She’s just thankful Gabrielle and none of the girls were severely hurt.
