22-year-old arrested, charged with DUI manslaughter after Nassau County woman hit, killed

Nearly four months after a deadly crash, a 22-year-old is now charged with causing it. Investigators said Layton Mizell was under the influence when he hit and killed Patricia Trantham, 59, on State Road 115 near Bell Lane.

This week, troopers charged Mizell with DUI manslaughter.

"She was definitely one of those special people in my life. She was special to a lot of people," said Jennifer Samioglou, a close friend.

Transtham was known as the "leather lady." She sold leather across the country to the motorcycle community. She also had a shop at the Pecan Park Flea Market, for nearly 30 years.

"I'm glad the county and the state have done what's right by her, by taking it to this level," said Samioglou.

Samioglou said she is relieved there's been an arrest, but realizes this is a tragedy for everyone.

"It's a shame that he's got to live with this for the rest of his life. But hopefully justice will be served," she said.

Before Trantham died, she was planning a motorcycle ride to raise awareness against child abuse. Her family and friends are working to make her wish come true this June.
