6-year-old Jacksonville hero honored for possibly saving mother's life

Six-year-old Sam got the first-ever junior lifesaving award presented by the State Attorney’s Office this afternoon.

“It isn’t just piece of paper,” said the child’s mother, Farah Algburi. “It’s something special!”

Sam is  being honored for his heroism on Aug. 14, 2018.

Algburi was walking Sam to school that day when she was shot.

Sam sprang into action, running to a nearby home and calling for help.  He told dispatchers that his mother was shot by his dad.

“I just want to say thank you to the State Attorney’s Office for doing that for Sam,” she said. “… It just takes my heart away …”

Sam’s award was the first given out today  during the 2019 outstanding Law Enforcement Officer Awards. Law enforcement from around the district attended the event and several awards were handed it out to law enforcement officers from around the district.

State Attorney Melissa Nelson called Sam’s story  inspiring.

“Sam has been in our office many times since this tragic events since August and every time we see him our hearts are just filled with inspiration,” said Nelson.
