Action News Jax Investigates: Hundreds of violations at local pools

An Action News Jax investigation revealed more than 300 pools in Jacksonville had unsatisfactory inspections over the last year for different violations.

Records show many of the violations were resolved quickly and the inspection was upgraded to satisfactory for many cases but not all.

Ryan Oaks Apartments on the Southside had an unsatisfactory inspection for its pool on May 16 after it was found to have five violations.

According to state statute, the violations were against requirements including keeping proper handrails for pool steps and one requiring the pool to have a lifesaving ring in good condition.

“I hope they fix it pretty soon,” resident Sean Miller said. “Real fast. Real quick. Mainly for the kids. Just to be safe.”

Logan’s Pointe Apartments is another complex with an unsatisfactory inspection for its pool for five violations dated July 24, 2015.

The apartment complex was listed as having five violations.

An address listed as Lenox Court apartments with the state, which we found is now named Madelyn Oaks, has an unsatisfactory inspection for six violations according to records.

Action News Jax went to the complex to find out if they are doing anything to correct the problems but we were immediately told to leave the property and management declined to answer any questions.

Action News Jax reached out to Ryan Oaks and Logan's Pointe apartments and has not heard back for comment yet.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report this week showing almost 80 percent of all inspections had at least one violation, with one in eight inspections resulting in an immediate closure.
