Atlantic Beach neighbors fear traffic near ‘AshleGryre' unsafe

People are demanding answers after a vehicle crashed into an Atlantic Beach Boutique’s storefront for the fourth time in several years.

Tonight we’re learning the city is speaking to the Florida Department of Transportation and management of the shopping plaza to find a solution. FDOT said in June of this year they’d analyze the situation, looking for a potential solution over the next six months. The Mayor, Ellen Glasser, tells us she’ll keep us posted on the status of the findings and research.

The owner tells us she’s facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.

"We don't want to leave our community, we really don't,” said Spence. "We really just want to run a business and be here, that's it.”

We told you last year when a car slammed into the store ---- and previously, when it happened in 2014. Amanda Steele tells me she witnessed one of the past incidents.

“I was actually working that night,” said Steele. “We came by here and saw it.”

Tonight, she and others tell me they’d like to see a safer block at the intersection of Atlantic and 3rd. It leads into this shopping center and the beaches town center.

“Regardless of the direction that they’re going in people are going through that intersection at a pretty high rate of speed,” said Steele.

Action News Jax monitored traffic at the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Third for over an hour. We found records from the state revealing five total crashes at the intersection in the past three years with nine total injuries.

People in the area are asking what can be done to prevent another incident like this. I’m reaching to the Atlantic and Neptune Beaches city officials to determine if there are measures being discussed to prevent others incidents like this one.
