Beaches community hosts supply drive for Ukrainian refugees resettling in Jacksonville

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. — The Beaches community, led by the city of Atlantic Beach, has come together to rally in support of Ukrainian refugees resettling in Jacksonville.

A two-day Ukrainian Refugee Resettlement Supply Drive is being held at City Hall in Atlantic Beach Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

They’re collecting new or gently used household items but are not accepting furniture or clothing at this time.

Kevin Hogencamp is the Deputy City Manager of the City of Atlantic Beach.

“Every time in Atlantic Beach we’ve asked the community to step up and help our fellow residents -- and in this case total strangers -- folks who come through this community are just so loving and so generous,” Hogencamp said. “We’re getting people from Jax Beach and across the intercoastal.”

The City and volunteers are working with Catholic Charities who will soon help about 100 Ukrainians refugees resettle in Jacksonville.

Many in Atlantic Beach shared that they want to do their part in making the transition as smooth as possible.

Action News Jax spoke with Signe Evans who unloaded a carful of items Friday.

“Some people really need the help,” Evans said. “They really do. We’ve got extra things, or I can go to Target and help them have a good settlement here.”

When Evans heard about the drive a month ago, she printed off the recommended list of items. On Friday every item was checked off.

“Doesn’t someone need an apron? Evans asked. “Someone needs a toolbox to take care of things at the house. So I just made a list of everything I knew you’d have to have.”

Evans said she wants the refugees to know they’re welcome here.

“They come with nothing,” Evans said. “I’ve never been in that position, but I know it must be really hard.”
