15-foot boat sinks near Jetties because of how it was anchored, officials say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Coast Guard rescued three men from the rocks over the weekend and a good Samaritan stepped in and saved another man from the water, authorities said.

The Coast Guard said the 15-foot boat sank because of the way it was anchored which led to it being pulled under in rough conditions.

No one was hurt.

Buck Gergely of B&M Bait and Tackle said he has been fishing his whole life and knows how dangerous the area can be with the jetties and the strong current.

“It takes some good seamanship to get in and out of there without someone getting hurt,” he said.

The Coast Guard said the boat was pulled under by the waves and current because of how the men anchored it.

Gergely said fishermen have a code to help others in situations like this one.

“Most of them do. Everybody is looking (out) for somebody else,” Gergely said.
