Rally held for Camden County mom killed in deputy-involved shooting

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — A rally was held Thursday evening for a Camden County mom. Latoya James was shot and killed when deputies served a drug-related search warrant at a Woodbine home back in May.

Her family and friends, along with the family’s attorney and pastor, asked for justice and change at the rally.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said deputies served the warrant just before 5:00 in the morning back in May.

The GBI said a man by the name of Vershawn Brown was also inside the house.

The GBI says there was an exchange of gunfire between deputies and Brown and James.

The agency released bodycam footage of the incident, but only roughly four minutes of a more than three-hour video.

The family is asking for that video in its entirety.

”If somebody knocks on your door and comes in your house at 4:45 in the morning what are you going to do? It was unlawful... violated her civil rights,” Bakari Sellers, the family’s attorney said.

James’ family plans to sue the county and the sheriff’s office for $25 million in damages.

The sheriff’s office told Action News Jax it’s aware of the rally, but couldn’t make any comments on the case because the GBI is investigating.
