Catching waves: Children, young adults with disabilities hit the water at Neptune Beach

NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. — You could feel his excitement as Max Etzkorn headed toward the ocean.

His partner helped find the perfect wave and Etzkorn rode it all the way to shore -- a big smile on his face.

“He has disabilities, not only developmental but visual, and it’s really amazing seeing him be a natural in the water and act like there is no disability,” his mom Lorraine Rodriguez said.

He was among dozens of children and young adults who hit the water at Neptune Beach Wednesday for a special surf camp.

Surrounded by supporters, they caught waves, went kayaking and enjoyed the ocean.

“They just have such a good time that I think it’s a different atmosphere, a different realm for them. Maybe they’re equal, maybe they’re more equal in the water. It’s an excellent experience,” Joseph Matacia said.

Matacia has been volunteering at HEAL’s Surf Camp for more than a decade. This year, more than 100 volunteers came out.

“These kids are brave. They’re putting that all aside. I think the water is very therapeutic,” Matacia said.

The bonds are obvious between the surfers and their partners. Yasniel Collazo wouldn’t touch the water before meeting Jason.

At 9 years old, he's now riding waves like a pro.

“I feel proud, very very proud and thankful because I never thought my son was going to do that. Never in my life. And look at him! The little rock star,” his mom Rose said.

Parents say the experience builds confidence, and has brought so much joy to their loved ones.
