Caught on Camera: Man on bicycle tried to steal golf cart from Atlantic Beach driveway, deputies say

Atlantic Beach, Fla. — On Tuesday Action News Jax told you about an increase in stolen golf carts in one of our beach communities.

After noting an increase in thefts, the Atlantic Beach Police Department urged owners to remember to secure their golf carts, especially through the summer season.

In an official post Wednesday, the department says deputies are now working to locate a man captured on camera attempting to steal a parked golf cart right from the owners driveway.

Police say shortly after midnight on June 4, the suspect was riding a bicycle when he spotted the golf cart at a residence on Beach Ave. The man can be seen on video trying to take the anti-theft device known as a “wheel boot” off the golf cart.

The suspect is described a white male wearing a yellow LA Lakers tank top, dark-colored board shorts and no shoes. Deputies say he appears to be in his early 20′s with light brown or reddish hair.

The victim reported to deputies that she was told the suspect was seen in a separate garage on 18th St. only a few hours earlier.

Eric Sherline owns Southern Breeze Cart Rental and he said there are other ways to secure your cart, especially since these golf carts can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $16,000.

“If you can afford to lose your cart then don’t do anything, fine, but if you don’t want to lose your cart, you definitely need to have full coverage insurance and you should put a GPS on it or some kind of anti-theft device on that cart,” Sherline said.
