Changes proposed for busy intersection in Neptune Beach

NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. — Foot and car traffic is constant at 3rd Street and Atlantic Boulevard in Neptune Beach.

Lexie Artigue told Action News Jax she is regularly among crowds attempting to cross the intersection.

“I’ve come close to being hit again on my board because I’ve paid attention but other cars haven’t," the skateboarder said.

TRENDING:

Action News Jax has previously contacted the Florida Department of Transportation about the intersection three separate times – when cars ran the lights and plowed into the Beaches Shopping Plaza.

On Tuesday, the FDOT hosted a public hearing on improvements proposed for the area.

“I would never cross that street walking. I would drive," Kate Nicholson, who works near the intersection, said. "It just feels like a big street to me. Like, I wouldn’t really think to cross it walking. I wouldn’t really walk to any of those restaurants or anywhere down that way.”

A rendering shows changes proposed for the intersection include a pedestrian island in the middle of the 3rd Street crosswalk, lane widening and median adjustments.

According to Artigue, “It’d be easier for people to actually cross. It’s difficult for people to cross because of how big it is and there not that much time.”

She said the changes would make her feel more comfortable when she’s riding around on her skateboard.
