Clay County approves pushing back starting date, requires face masks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Clay County School Board approved the proposed reopening plan pushing back the school start date to August 25.

All brick and mortar schools would be open for students who choose to attend. All students, K-12, and their families have the option of online virtual learning through Clay Virtual Academy and OneClay Online. Students in grades 7-12 have the option of hybrid learning. So far, about 23 percent of students have chosen to go virtual, which is just under 9,000 students.

The district told our partners at ActionNewsJax that about 2,000 teachers say they feel safe going back to in-person learning. Only 265 have said they would prefer to teach online.

Face masks will also be required for students in grades 3-12 and all staff when social distancing is not possible. For students in pre-Kindergarten through second grade, face masks will be strongly recommended.
