New elementary school breaks ground in Clay County as growth continues

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — A new school is breaking ground in Clay County to accommodate for a rapidly growing population, and give families more options.

Off State Road 315 in Green Cove Springs, you see and hear a lot of construction at every turn.

“People continually move to Clay County,” said Clay County Superintendent of Schools David Broskie.

New homes are underway to accommodate for a population of more than 222,000 people -- and that’s just as of last summer.

More people are on the way.

“We see a lot of growth,” Broskie added.

And that’s brought on the need for a new school, too.

A nearly 21-acre site located at 3530 County Road 315 will be the home of Spring Park Elementary School. It will house 48 classrooms and have capacity for 851 students in grades K-6.

The school, which broke ground on Friday, marks the 43rd one to be built in Clay County.

It’s been five years since the last one, and the goal is for it to alleviate overcrowding in other nearby classrooms.

“The board has not voted on an official district boundary for this but we would envision that it would be Lake Asbury Elementary in that area and south of Fleming Island,” Broskie said.

It will welcome students next year, and families can find out more about enrollment in October or November of this year.

“This is definitely gonna happen, August 2023,” Broskie said.
