Deputies searching for couple using counterfeit cash in Nassau County

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies say a couple is using fake $100 bills at local businesses.

So far, at least five businesses were targeted.

The couple is on a shopping spree. But deputies say their cash is trash.

“That’s not right for somebody come in and try to rip off other people,” said Kevin Lee, owner of Nails Place.

Lee said a woman came into his business and bought a gift card with a fake $100 bill.

While Lee said they didn’t realize it was fake until after she left, his surveillance cameras were rolling.

“She was professional,” said Lee.

Deputies said the man and woman match the same description  of those passing counterfeit bills at the other businesses.

Deputies said the pair bought some liquor at a liquor store, paying with fake bills.

They also got hungry and deputies said they paid with a counterfeit bill at a Tropical Smoothie.

According to a police report, they took off in a White Chrysler 200.

Deputies said the woman also tried buying some items at Hibbett Sports, but she wasn’t so lucky.

The clerk realized the money was fake.

The clerk said the woman then grabbed the bills and quickly left.

She was last seen walking next door to a Target, where deputies said she tried again.

Deputies said the man was able to buy some coffee, but the woman failed again.

Action News Jax has reported a number of fake bills being passed around in St. Johns County – which is why deputies said they are working with investigators in Nassau to see if they could be related.

Lee said he will now give future Franklins a second look.
