Duval County school leaders finalizing plans to consolidate certain elementary schools

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Hundreds of students in the Duval County Public School District could be attending a different school next year.

DCPS is considering consolidating several elementary schools in the north and northwest neighborhoods of Jacksonville.

Duval County school leaders held a virtual community meeting Thursday night to discuss final recommendations.

Right now, the district’s plan is to close Brentwood Elementary School after the 2020-2021 school year and send students to North Shore Elementary School.

In November 2019, Action News Jax reported on a letter sent to parents with children at Brentwood Elementary School.

Superintendent Diana Green said “the district can’t afford to support the resources students and teachers need to be successful.”

Another recommendation includes merging John Love Early Learning Center with Long Branch Elementary effective for the 2020-2021 school year.

The district recommends transitioning St. Clair Evans Elementary students to the former Northwestern Middle School this upcoming school year.

The plan is for Carter G. Woodson to merge after the 2020-2021 school year.

The School Board is expected to vote on the final recommendations Tuesday, June 16.For the details of the recommendations, click here.
