Duval Democrats celebrate Biden’s win, Republicans say ‘it’s not over’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — More than 100 people gathered outside the Duval County Courthouse shortly after Joe Biden’s projected win to celebrate the victory over President Donald Trump.

The rally was organized by the New Florida Majority. This is the first time Duval voted blue in a presidential election since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Daniel Henry, the chair of the Duval County Democratic Party, said this will give them the momentum for future elections.

“It’s an amazing result that we have been working for over the last year,” Henry said. “A new opportunity for us to be able to see what politics looks like in Jacksonville.”

He said COVID-19′s impact on Duval County and northeast Florida helped push votes toward Joe Biden and Kamala Harris with a shift in demographic toward younger and Black voters.

While Democrats rejoiced, Republicans said it’s not over yet. Diane Scherff founded the Trump Club of St. Johns County and expressed concerns about illegal voting in an election with razor-thin margins.

She ran Trump’s campaign in St. Johns County in 2016 because she said she wanted to drain the swamp. Scherff fears a Biden presidency will shift control back to Washington D.C. and not the tax-payers.

“I just want the right person who truly got the right amount, the most legal votes, to win,” she said. “Right now, I’m not giving up. And Trump’s followers aren’t giving up.”

Scherff also suspects problems with mail-in ballots and said it needs to be resolved in the Supreme Court.
