Effort to rename three Duval County Public Schools

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — There is an effort to rename three more Duval County Public Schools – in addition to the six schools that have names with Confederate ties.

In a school board meeting Tuesday, Board Member Ashley Smith-Juarez introduced a request to rename the following schools:

  • Andrew Jackson High School
  • Jean Ribault High School
  • Jean Ribault Middle School

In a proposal letter, Smith Juarez said the schools are named after people responsible for “marginalizing and killing indigenous people”.

In a 6 to 1 vote, the board accepted the written request to begin the renaming process. It’s expected to cost around $200,000 per school.

The next step is to obtain the School Board’s acceptance of the renaming petition and refer the matter to Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene to get input from the community and submit a recommendation to the School Board.
