Homeowner says political campaign sign stolen, expert warns of similar crimes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A local homeowner said Wednesday, he’s trying to track down the person captured on video taking a presidential campaign sign from his front yard.

Richard Reed told Action News Jax, “It doesn’t matter what political party or candidate, I’m an American. It’s my right to put a sign in my yard.”

According to the homeowner, it’s not the first time someone has been caught on camera with his sign.

He said months ago a neighbor, who he has already confronted, kicked it over and threw it in the trash.

Action News Jax Law and Safety Expert Dale Carson said he expects similar crimes to become more common as time ticks toward the election.

He said it’s usually petit theft and the person responsible could face fines and more serious consequences.

Carson described, “In this circumstance, it would be a misdemeanor probably punishable by up to a year in jail.”

Reed said he filed a police report and is ready to press charges.

“I started with a $100 reward. I posted it to the Neighborhood app, other neighbors are very supportive – other people have offered money.”

He said there’s a much simpler solution.

“Respect other people’s property. Respect other people’s opinion,” explained Reed.

The homeowner said if the person responsible brings the sign back and apologizes he’d be willing to drop the issue.
