Jacksonville Humane Society sees uptick of kittens in shelter

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Humane Society needs your help: its animal shelter is packed with kittens and it’s pushing for families to adopt or foster them.

“It is the height of the kitten season,” said Lindsay Layendecker.

According to Layendecker, the Jacksonville Humane Society has kittens everywhere.

“They are making their way to the shelter. So we are asking the community if they are interested in stepping up,” Layendecker explained.

According to JHS, in 2022 it has so far received over 1,000 kittens under the age of 5 months, with over 400 of those having come in the last four weeks.

Layendecker says people usually find them in unusual places.

“A lot of times the mother cats will try to put them in some place where they are going to be protected from the elements. So, people find them under their bushes, under their garages, trailers, sheds things like that,” said Layendecker.

She adds JHS’ goal when it receives those kittens is to make sure they are adopted that same day, and staff are making those adoptions seven days a week.

“The community is wonderful about coming in and adopting,” said Layendecker.

If you would like to adopt, visit the Jacksonville Humane Society website for more information.
