Jacksonville: Long lines form around TIAA Bank Field for coronavirus testing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A long drive-through line formed around TIAA Bank Field on Saturday morning as people waited to get tested for COVID-19

Some cars had a single passenger in them and others were packed with four people.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Chief Keith Powers says healthcare workers will administer test daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“It’s a nasal swab,” Powers said.

Powers says based on the limited number of supplies, individuals must meet some strict criteria in order to receive a test.

“We’d like to try to stay around 250 people a day,” said Powers.

  • You have to be 65 or older with an on-site temperature of 99.6 degrees or higher and have respiratory symptoms.
  • First responders and health care workers will also get tested regardless of having any symptoms.

“It’s very important that we keep that population healthy and make sure they didn’t contract the virus,” Powers explained.

Chief Administrative Officer Brian Hughes says even though supplies are low the city does plan to expand testing for COVID-19.

“There is no doubt, in the coming days -- maybe a week or more -- we’re going to have more equipment, more supplies and the criteria will grow,” said City of Jacksonville’s Chief Administrative Officer Brian Hughes.

Powers asked that patients bring their driver’s license and health insurance card but having insurance is not required to get tested.

“They will not be turned away if they do not have health insurance, but the federal government is asking us if they have it to get that information,” Powers said.

The city says if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and can’t get tested right away should call their doctor.
