Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry extends mask mandate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — If you live in Duval County, you’ll be required to wear your mask in public and indoors for at least another 30 days.

Mayor Lenny Curry extended his mask mandate today.

“I think that’s an awesome idea. I mean, we need to extend it. The virus is still here,” Sandrea told Action News Jax.

The announcement comes just three days after Gov. Ron DeSantis lifted all pandemic restrictions statewide on restaurants and bars.

“I think if everybody wore the masks, we could get beyond this pandemic. It could help us,” Sherlene Matthews said.

Any fines or fees attached to any COVID-19 regulations were also suspended.

You cannot be fined for not wearing a mask here in Duval County. Matthews thinks that a good thing.

“I think that would just open up another door. The people that’s going to wear the masks are going to wear the masks,” Matthews told Action News Jax’s Courtney Cole.

Having the mask mandate in place for another 30 days means if you are 6 years old and older, you are required to wear a mask in public and indoor spaces where social distancing isn’t possible.

According to the latest data from the city, since Curry’s Emergency Executive Proclamation was declared, there have only been 14 complaints filed against local businesses for COVID-19-related regulations.

Only two of those were regarding masks.

The mandate will take effect in Duval County until Oct. 27. Curry will decide then if he wants to extend it.
