Jax Housing Authority brings COVID-19 vaccines to seniors

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Hundreds of seniors received COVID-19 vaccines Friday thanks to an initiative by the Jax Housing Authority. With Agape Family Health and the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, health care workers vaccinated 500 people at Centennial Towers Senior Center.

Willie Thomas has lived at the towers for six years and has been unable to drive for quite some time.

Before Friday, access to the vaccine was out of the question.

“I got the shot so I could be safe and be safe to other people,” Thomas said.

His friend, Thomas Davison, also lives at the towers. He told Action News Jax that he could not wait to get his shot.

“It’s something that will stop this COVID. I’ll take it,” Davison said.

Wellness On Wheels made its first stop at the towers Friday. The initiative targets parts of town with less access to health care. JTA retrofitted two of its buses as mobile clinics, making the process quick and easy.

“You don’t have to worry about anything after that, and I think it’s a nice thing,” Thomas said.

In the meantime, both Thomas and Davison shared some advice: If you have a shot at getting the shot, do it.

JHA plans to vaccinate seniors at Hogan Creek Tower March 25.

Those eligible can register by calling JHA at 904-630-3843.
