JFRD makes annual ice cream social at Wolfson Children’s Hospital happen despite COVID-19

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — First responders on the front line of the fight against the coronavirus took time out for patients at Wolfson Children’s Hospital Monday.

Firefighters with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department couldn’t walk through the front door for their visit.

Capt. Eric Prosswimmer said, “With everything going on, we’re not able to go up there and see them right now. There are some kids that aren’t allowed to leave their rooms because they’re high risk.”

Social distancing guidelines made it almost impossible for firefighters to follow through on an annual ice cream tradition.

“They go up, they visit the kids that are sick in the hospital. They bring them ice cream, they serve them ice cream, they try and pick up their spirits,” said Prosswimmer.

Instead, the crews lifted their ladder, so kids didn’t miss out. Leaders at Wolfson Children’s Hospital said the sweet treat and simple wave went a long way to brighten the little patients’ day.

Dr. Cicely Brooks said, “I’m sure they’re all wanting to come out of their rooms and come down and pet the dog, and talk to the firefighters. We know these are unique times we can’t do that but this is just as important for them to see we care for them as kids.”

The modified ice cream social meant just as much to the firefighters.

“We should all take the best of every given situation that we’re give. Make the best of it, that’s what we’re doing,” said Prosswimmer.
