JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police are still looking for a suspect involved in a shooting in the Brentwood area.

Police say a man was shot three times in the torso, but he is expected to recover.

Lawanda Sheperd has been living in the Brentwood area for four years, and she rides her bike all the time.

“I haven’t seen any issues,” she said.

She says she feels safe here.

“The police station is right up the street, so they come around a lot between different times of the day,” Sheperd explained. “And also we have a neighborhood watch up the street.”

At 2 a.m., police were out here responding to a shooting.

They say an argument broke out between several people inside an apartment, and when it escalated, a man fled as gunfire was exchanged.

Sheperd says she might’ve heard something last night, but didn’t think anything of it since it was a holiday weekend.

“About three pops of fireworks, didn’t last long, and that was it,” she said.

Though she’s surprised, she’s confident that police will find the suspect soon.

“As open as it is out here, I feel like a lot of people know each other around here,” she said. “I think they’ll get who they’re looking for.”

She wants this case solved so her neighbors can move past this.

“I hope what happened last night doesn’t bring down the energy in this neighborhood because it’s really nice out here. I really like it out here.”
