‘Justice Caravan’ protesting racial injustice planned for Saturday in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Cities across the country are calling for justice in the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.

On Friday, their families will issue a joint statement calling for a congressional hearing and a national task force to create new bipartisan legislation on ending racial violence.

There is a local demonstration, being called a “Justice Caravan,” planned for Saturday. The Jacksonville Community Action Committee will host a protest right outside the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office headquarters on Bay Street.

They are protesting racial injustice and they are asking that police also release body cam footage involving the shooting death of Jamee Johnson, a Florida A & M University student.

Action News Jax told you last year when Johnson was killed in December by a JSO officer.

It happened during a traffic stop.

JSO said that Johnson reached for his gun, but his family said they do not believe that. JSO said the officer body cam was dislodged during the altercation and there was also no dashcam footage.

Since then, Florida’s Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried has asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to review the shooting.

The rally downtown begins Saturday at 3 p.m. in front of JSO headquarters.

Organizers will also be asking for the release of inmates to stop the spread of coronavirus and transparency when it comes to the number of inmates with COVID-19.
